Boxing Day 2019 Review

This is our first post, thank you for giving your time, enjoy

Liverpool @ Leicester City (4-0)

We were all wondering if Liverpool could come in after their long spell in Qatar and step right back into form. Did they ever. The team with the title of, ‘Best Club in the World,’ proved it. They came into a 1st vs 2nd game on the road and demolished Leicester City. They looked like the undefeated team that we know them to be. It was a battle of Brendan Rogers vs his old club, and the old flame turned out to be in the better stage in life. They are looking like another “Invincibles,” that might not lose a game this season. Liverpool are head and shoulders ahead of anyone in the league, and it just looks like a race for second.

Newcastle United @ Manchester United (1-4)

The Red Devils put on a proper schlacking to the visiting Magpies. Matthew Longstaff opened the scoring with a beautiful piece of play between him and Joelinton to set the 19-year-old up at the top of the box where he calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner. Manchester United quickly responded with Martial finishing at the near post seven minutes later. They would go on to put three more in the net with Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford joining the cause, with Martial collecting a brace. Man. United dominated 74% of the possession and the three young strikers all collect goals.

Arsenal @ Bournemouth (1-1)

All eyes are on the new man at the helm of Arsenal, Mikel Arteta. Arsenal followed the lead of Chelsea and Manchester United to hire recent players to the reigns of the club. The sweet story was short lived as the backline of Arsenal carelessly give the ball away and the Cherries pounce on the opportunity and open the score 35 minutes in. Luckily, the day is not a total loss as the Gunners put together a good piece of attacking play that ends in Aubameyang being at the right place at the right time to place the ball in the back of the net to collect a point for the new manager’s first day.

Burnley @ Everton (0-1)

Another manager started at his new home today as Carlo Ancelotti managed his first game for Everton at Goodison Park. Everton needed some type of result to start the climb away from the relegation zone. The game was deadlocked for the majority of the game with Everton controlling 68% of possession and registering 23 (5 on goal), with Burnely recording 6 (none on goal.) The deadlock was broken in the 80th minute by Sidibé putting in a beautiful cross and Calvert-Lewin knocking in a diving header nicking the ball off the upright. Ancelotti starts his reign off right, but there is much more work to be done with a squad of top 8 talent somehow fighting a relegation scare.

Southampton @ Chelsea (2-0)

The Saints pull off a huge upset as they travel to Stamford Bridge. The Baby Blues of Chelsea are shocked to suffer a loss while controlling 66% of possession. The best way to beat a team on the road while not controlling possession is to score on the counter-attack, and that is exactly what Southampton did. As soon as Chelsea lost possession, Southampton would break fast and early. They succeeded twice as Obafemi and Redmond finished off team attacking play and earned three points.

Brighton @ Tottenham (1-2)

Mourinho’s men take to the field in the what should’ve been a one-way run down. The Spurs are much more talented and far better coached. Harry starts by putting the ball in the back of the net early on, but VAR strikes again, and the goal is called back. It seemed that his arm was just behind the backline of Brighton. Why would you call a player offside if the only part of his body offside was a part that you can’t even use? It makes no sense, there should be a rule change. Thirteen minutes later, a foul is called on Spurs, when on replay, looks like there was no contact at all. The ensuing free kick leads to the opening goal as Webster leaps above everyone and heads the ball in. After the halftime break, the Spurs come out much cleaner and controlling the game with an iron grip. Harry Kane, with some luck, scores after the Brighton defenders miss-clear the ball in the box and he pounces on. The goal was well-deserved though as he was the hardest working player on that field. About ten minutes later, Dele Alli finishes off a beautiful piece of play that hadn’t been seen all game and the Spurs secure three points at home.

Watford @ Sheffiled United (1-1)

This game started in the 27th minute as a long bomb from the Watford keeper leads to a flick header at the half-way line which sends Deulofeu on a break as he finishes near post on a goalkeeper who was indecisive when to advance on the striker and was left out of position. The next goal came for the Blades as a useless foul at the corner of the box for a penalty. Norwood steps up and converts. The second half is left scoreless and both teams walk away with a point.

West Ham United @ Crystal Palace (1-2)

This game was a battle of the mid-tier London clubs with managers in Roy Hodgson and Manuel Pellegrini in the twilight of their careers. The game was scoreless in the first half. Snodgross breaks the stalemate for the Hammers as he puts in a beautiful, curling left-footed shot from a build-up that started with a goal-kick. Crystal Palace ties it up as Kouyaté is left unmarked at the top of the box. In the 90th minute, Jordan Ayew takes on five defenders on his own to secure three points on their home field.

Aston Villa @ Norwich City (1-0)

Two of the newly promoted teams are battling it out in the relegation zone. The first half is scoreless and nothing very exciting happened. In the 64th minute, Villa players break through a poor defensive effort and Hourihane is left at the top of the box to blast one in. Norwich is now at the bottom of the table with 12 points from 19 games.
